Books For Sellers

You’ll refer often to these short (most are under 200 pages) and inexpensive (as little as $9.95) volumes. If you can’t find them at your local bookstore and don’t want to special-order them, check your public library’s shelves at 333.33 or HD1363-95, depending on the classification system being used.

You may also run across the odd video, such as Preparing Your Home To Sell, put out by Better Homes and Gardens.

  Turk, Howard
Home Free
Prentice Hall Canada, Toronto, 2001
Good outlines of the major issues involved in buying or selling a home, written by an experienced real estate lawyer.
  Rejnis, Ruth
The Everything Homeselling Book
Adams Media Corporation, Holbrook MA, 2000
Comprehensive and well-written, an invaluable resource whether you’re selling privately or through a realtor. Glossary and Index.
  Irwin, Robert
The For Sale By Owner Kit
Dearborn Financial Publishing, 1996
(American: some details may not apply.)
Very strong on pricing, preparing, advertising and showing your property. Offers a brutally useful chapter on regrouping if your efforts are not drawing the response you want. Index.
  Kirby, John E.
For Sale By Owner
Toronto: Uphill Publishing Ltd., 1997
The realtor-author provides tips on what NOT to include in your advertising, dealing with buyers, negotiating, and a summary of several of the clauses in a standard Offer To Purchase. Very good glossary.
  Manning, Helen and Lee, Thealzel
Selling Your Own Home
Toronto, Summerhill Press Ltd., 1989
A concise and straightforward guide by two experienced private sellers. Glossary.
  Walsh, Edward M.
For Sale By Owner
Vancouver: Self-Counsel Press, 1994
Contains a number of very useful lists, descriptions of the purchase contract, and tips on negotiating. Glossary.
  Webb, Martha and Zackheim, Sarah
Dress Your House For Success
New York: Three Rivers Press, 1997
Highly recommended. Webb explains how she has used her experience in film production to "stage" the houses she’s sold, helping them stand out from the competition and allowing purchasers to establish the sort of visceral connection to them that leads to quick sales for top dollar. Index.
